    Got B.A.T?

Knowing that we have a security system in our home is an added measure of comfort for me.  Especially when my husband is out of town or if we as a family vacation away from home.  Setting the alarm before leaving home has become a habit for me.  But, recently I left home with my children and in rushing to leave forgot to set the alarm.  Lucky for me I have B.A.T. (broadband alarm transmitter)!  This allows me to arm and disarm my secuirty system from my iphone.Having the B.A.T. system allows you to control and monitor your security system any time any place.  That’s right you can control and monitor your system from any smartphone or PC.  The system allows you to be notified immediately via text, email or phone call when there is an alarm or when your system is armed or disarmed.Another added bonus is this allows you to monitor your own security system for 1/3 the price of most monitoring contracts.

This technology is easy to use and simplifies life.  Want to learn more?  Just give us a call or better yet send us a message and we will fill you in on all the befitis of owning B.A.T. for your home or office.

    “Aging In Place” Technology

America is growing older, our parents are living longer, and the costs associated with aging are going up.  What can you do?

“Aging in place” technology can help you care for elderly and disabled loved ones all while they live safely and securely in their own homes.  Technology has made it possible for family, friends, and others to remotely watch over them.  Components highly recommends CloseBy Network for Aging In Place technology solutions.

How does it work?  Using wireless battery operated sensors and the Internet members of your loved ones care network can be notified and informed about activities of daily living.  CloseBy Network will log, record, and even notify you via text message or email when:

    • The front door opens
    • The medicine cabinet or other doors and drawers are opened
    • The refrigerator door is open
    • When they are in bed or a favorite chair
    • What the temperature is inside the home
    • When the stove is in use

CloseBy Network can be installed in just about any place your loved one may be whether it be at home or in an assisted living facility.  Since the sensors are wireless no new wiring is needed and installation is quick and easy.

For my information on how Aging In Place technology can provide you with peace of mind you can contact Jason at 480-361-9500.  You can also visit the CloseBy Network webpage here.  Don’t spend a minute more wondering about how your loved one is doing, let technology help you care for them even when you can’t be by their side.

Don’t Let Your Guard Down Even For A Minute!

This last week I got a call from a good friend of mine.  She came home from a day of work to discover that her home had been broken into and she had been robbed.  She was calling me to find out if Components could help her out with updating her security system.  Yes!  The sad thing is that she has an alarm system.  In the course of our conversation I asked her if she had turned on the alarm system when she left?  Her answer was probably not.  She also told me that it wouldn’t have mattered much because they came in through the window and she didn’t have contacts on the windows.  My heart broke for her and I was grateful that she wasn’t home when this all happened and that the worst thing that happened was that her pillow case got used as a bag to help empty out her house.

Friends, there are a few little “tricks” that I would like to share with you (maybe again for some of you) that will help you protect your family and your hard earned belongings.

Trick #1 – The first level of protection is an alarm sign in your yard and window decals in each of your windows.  This lets a potential intruder know that you may possibly have an alarm system armed and that it would be a safer bet to target a house that doesn’t have these notifications.

Trick #2 – Have an alarm system installed in your home or business.  Even if it isn’t armed, it’s there and when a potential burglar looks in your windows if he sees one he won’t know weather it is armed or not – why risk it!  Alarms can be as simple as contacts on your doors and windows that will let you know when the door or window is open.  You can add a glass break sensor that would alert you if a window was broken.  Motion sensors will pick up movement (don’t worry if you have pets – there are sensors that are designed to work with pets!)  You can even have security cameras put around or in your home to record activity.  We have some great options if you would like to go that route.

Trick #3 – USE YOUR ALARM!  It’s no good to you if you don’t use it!  With today’s technology, it is so easy to arm and disarm your alarm system – even from your phone or tablet.  There just isn’t a good enough excuse NOT to arm your system.

Trick #4 – Have your alarm system monitored.  Yes, your alarm system can deter a would be burglar with just a loud siren, but let’s face it – burglars are pretty savvy and they know that the odds of your neighbor running over to see what’s going on is not very likely.  Having the police dispatched immediately could save your life and your property.  Really, a monitoring service is a very small price to pay to help protect your family and your belongings!

I’m always so sad when bad things happen to good people and so I hope that these few tricks will help you keep your home, business, family and belongings safe and sound!  Please allow us at Components to help you with determining how to best put together your security system.  We would so rather hear from you before something happens at your home.

    Stay Safe!

Don’t Get Attacked by the Dog Days of Summer

So I learned something new today.  The term “Dog Days of Summer” comes from the ancient belief that Sirius, also called the Dog Star, in close proximity to the sun was responsible for the hot weather.  Everyone in AZ knows what I am talking about.  We have all gotten into a hot car and mistakenly touched a piece of chrome or some other car part (the steering wheel) only to immediately have what feels like a 3rd degree burn.  Never fun, but just a part of life in the Valley of the Sun.

While you don’t have a choice but to endure the heat on the inside of your car your electronics do.  And rather than spend your summer replacing electronics damaged by heat here are a few summer tips.

    1. Do not leave your smartphone, tablet computer, laptop, etc in your car for any period time.  FYI, I just went it took my laptop out of my truck.  It had only been in there for 5 minutes since I got back from lunch and already a laser sensor read a temp of 105.  Yikes!
    2. If you must leave an electronic device in your hot car do not leave it in direct sunlight.  Often times the sun’s light passing through the windshield or window can act like a magnifying glass.
    3. Lastly, If you must leave an electronic device in your hot car you may want to at least consider removing the battery.  I suggest taking the battery with you.  No only does heat cause damage to electronics but it can cause batteries to explode.  An explosion inside your car on a hot summer day when you are least expecting it is not a pleasant thing.

So do your electronics a favor and keep them out of your hot car.  They will last longer, perform better, and work when you need them to work.  Don’t let the Dog Days of Summer bite you!

Avoiding BAD Whole House Electronic Installations

Have you ever had a contractor complete a bad electronic installation in your home? I am sure we all have. At the time of these poor installations we get extremely frustrated but when you look back they are pretty funny. Here are a few funny pictures of some really poor audio/video equipment installations. Let first say that these installations were not done by us. Although we may have fixed these installations I assure you that we do have much higher standards then the people who installed these.

If you have had any of your audio/video equipment installed and the completed project looks like this hurry and call us before any of your friends and family see. You definitely do not want them laughing at you behind your back.

Remember that Experiences Are Important and So Are People

I work with a group of 14 teenage girls at our church and once a week we get together to either learn something new or do something fun.  I thought I might share with you a little about the activity we did this week.  It really wasn’t anything special.  We all gathered together at a home in their large custom home theater room to watch the Disney movie Tangled all together.  At first thought, you’re probably thinking – “yeah, that’s nice – so”.  Well, what you don’t know is that one of the girls in this group just passed away less than a week ago after having been in the hospital for several months.  It has been a really tough week for these girls as this young women was loved very much.  We took the opportunity, while sitting in this room, to make our own home video of each girl and adult there telling special memories of this young women that we will share with her family later.  After that we enjoyed just some fun girl time complete with candy and popcorn.  We sang along with the movie and said all the lines that we knew and by the end of the evening I think everyone was feeling a little better.

Why do I share this with you?  Well, here at Components we have always talked about providing our clients with certain types of “experiences”.  We want you to experience what it is to work with professionals like us, we want you to experience living in the kind of house you want to live in, we want you to experience the kind of lifestyle that you choose and we strive to help you achieve those experiences.  This last week, it was one of my goals to gather these girls together and help them experience healing and fun times.  I believe that just one of the many byproducts of an experience like gathering together as either a family or a group to enjoy a movie in your home can do just what it did for these girls.  It is my hope that the services and systems that we provide to our customers helps to make their lives just a little easier and more enjoyable so that you can gather your friends and family close together and make memories and have experiences with them.

Remember that life is shorter than you think so gather those you love around you often and tell them so.

Streaming Music Services—Which Ones Should You Pick?

So unless you have been living in a cave you probably know by now that there are quite a few ways for you listen to your favorite music.  You can listen to music on your smartphone, in your smart car, on your computer, your home audio system, etc.  Much of your music can now be accessed and stored on the cloud using a variety of different streaming music services.  Which one should you use?  Here is a brief guide to streaming music services.

    1. First ask yourself is you want a free service or a paid service?  Free usually means that you will have to suffer through some advertisments.  Paid means you have more control and lots more options.
    2. Secondly where do you want to be able to listen to your music?  For example, Pandora is free and you can listen to it on your smartphone, PC, Sonos audio system, etc.  Spotify(the free version) is free but only on your PC, not on your smartphone.
    3. Thirdly do you want to be able to manage your music, i.e. playlists, etc., or just turn it on and let it play?  Pandora is a lot like turning on the radio in your car.  You simply tell Pandora the type of music you like and it creates a “station” that plays that type of music.  Rhapsody on the other hand allows you to search for artists, create playlists, favorites, etc. that you can access anwhere whether it be smartphone, PC, Sonos, house audio systems, etc.
    4. Finally, is audio quality important to you?  Different music services have different “bit rates” at which they stream music.  The higher the “bit rate” the better the quality audio.  This may not matter too much if you primarily listen to music on your mobile device.  However, if you have some really nice audio equipment in your home with some great speakers the better quality audio will make a difference.

At the end of the day choose a music service that best suits your lifestyle.  Almost all music services offer a free introductory period.  Give them a try and see if you like it.  If you find yourself using it frequently then stick with it, if not then dump it.  I would suggest that you narrow it down to 2 services one being a free service and the other a subscription service, then you can have the best of both worlds.

Good luck in your quest for the perfect combination of streaming music services!  Jason

A few tips to help you save money!

Did you know Components can help you save time and money this summer? Some of the products we offer can do just that. Here are a few money saving tips.

-20% of all electricity used in your home is for lighting. 50% of that is wasted by inefficient lighting or careless consumers. Being able to dim your lights by just 25% will save you 20% and extend the life of your light bulb by up to four times.
-Have your exterior lights turn on and off automatically. Save energy by ensuring your lights turn on at sunset and off at sunrise.
-No more forgetting to turn them off when you leave for work in the morning having them on all day. Have lights within your home turn off when there is no one in the room.
-Placing an occupancy sensor within a room can automatically turn off lights when there is no one in a room.
-Remembered that you forgot to turn off lights in your home when at work. No problem you can turn them off from your office computer or even your cell phone.

-Install motorized shades that can automatically go down to block light coming through windows in the afternoon to help reduce radiant heat in the summer.

-Use a programmable thermostat that’s easy to program. By setting a thermostat back by 10 to 15 degrees when you are not home you can save as much as 15%. With thermostats that we offer it is very easy to create programs. It is as easy as turning on your TV and selecting days, times, and temperatures that you want to set.

-Turn off that water heater when you’re not using it! Why heat up water when you don’t need it? Have your water heater only turn on when you are going to need hot water.

With Components Electronic Systems and Control4 products we can help you save money and the environment. Give us a call for more details on how we can help you.
